South Africa’s logistics sector is built on precision, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to safety. This year, that commitment was nationally recognised when two Unitrans drivers, Mavis Ndumo and Dennis Hlatshwayo, were honoured at the 2025 IVECO #ThankYouTrucker Awards.
Mavis was named the Best Truck Driver in South Africa, while Dennis secured an impressive third place, achievements that underline the standard of excellence that drives our industry forward.

These wins reflect far more than individual success. They highlight the continuous improvement, discipline, and deep professionalism that set benchmarks for the entire sector.
Excellence as a Daily Practice
With over 15 years of driving experience, Mavis Ndumo is more than a truck driver – she’s a symbol of resilience, professionalism, and service. Her manager, Vusi Nkuna, shares: “Mavis has been an exceptional driver with high customer care skills and is future-driven. She has represented the Total Energies Alrode operation with pride and professionalism. I highly recommend her for this recognition.”
Mavis describes hearing her name announced as the 2025 winner as “a moment of pride… a validation of years of dedication and safe driving.” For her, excellence is a habit built through routine safety checks, route planning, discipline and constant situational awareness. Excellence, for her, is consistency.
Dennis, with 18 years at Unitrans, echoes this sentiment. He’s known for his solid driving skills, clean record, and ability to handle different loads and routes with care. For him, excellence is anchored in patience, time management and respect for the road. One of his proudest moments was safely delivering a critical load through heavy rain – a reminder that skill is not only measured in kilometres, but in judgement, responsibility and reliability. His supervisor, Geoffrey Langa, shares: “Throughout his career at Unitrans, Dennis has displayed effort and growth. He has also gained substantial knowledge in transportation. Dennis takes great interest in upskilling himself and learning new processes. I consider him exceptional, reliable, and committed.”
Raising Standards: Safety as a Cornerstone of Industry Improvement
For both drivers, safety is the differentiator. Mavis says it best: “Safety is everything. It’s not just a rule, it’s a responsibility.” It means protecting her own life, fellow road users, the vehicle and the customer’s cargo. Excellence, for her, happens long before ignition: in the checks, the discipline, and the decisions made when no one is watching.
Dennis shares the same philosophy. His career-long lessons centre around:
- Thorough trip checks
- Responding responsibly to changing conditions
- And learning from every load.
These are not just personal principles, they are the standards that elevate the industry and keep South Africa moving safely and efficiently.
Driving Industry Progress, One Journey at a Time
Logistics is a catalyst for growth, stability and innovation across Africa. Drivers like Mavis and Dennis exemplify the professionalism required to maintain supply chains that feed communities, fuel economies and support businesses of every size.
Their achievements reinforce the idea that excellence behind the wheel directly uplifts the industries we serve from agriculture and FMCG to mining, petrochemical and industrial commodities. Every safe delivery strengthens relationships, reduces risk, and improves the reliability of the broader logistics ecosystem.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Professionals
Both winners share a belief in inspiring others, especially young drivers and women entering the industry. Mavis encourages female drivers with a simple message:
“Go for it. This industry needs more women.” Mavis has been appointed as a Master Driver at the Total Energies Alrode operation and aspires to become a driver trainer having successfully completed her driver training courses and awaiting accreditation. Mavis’ ambition is a reflection of a cycle of continuous improvement where excellence is taught, shared, and multiplied across the workforce.
Dennis’ advice is equally focused on growth: “Focus on safety first, learn from every load, and build good relationships with customers and colleagues.” This mindset is what strengthens the next era of African logistics professionals.
A Win for the Industry, Not Just Individuals
Competitions like IVECO #ThankYouTrucker elevate the profile of the sector and recognise the critical role drivers play. As Mavis notes, “Recognition inspires pride and encourages drivers to stay safe and committed.” These awards remind the country that excellence on the road is a shared responsibility and a shared achievement.
Mavis and Dennis’ achievements reflect what happens when discipline, professionalism and passion come together. Their stories are reminders that the logistics industry is not defined only by machinery, routes or tonnage, but by skilled individuals who raise the bar every day.
Through their commitment, they help shape a sector where excellence is not a target, but a standard and where continuous improvement keeps Africa moving forward.
