Unitrans Botswana successfully held a Road Safety Day at Bokamoso Junior Secondary School on the 21st of September 2018. Last year, Unitrans successfully held a similar event at St. Joseph’s Primary School with the kind support of the Departments of Road Transport & Safety, Motor Vehicle Accidents Fund (MVA) and Botswana Traffic Police. Unitrans Managing Director, Mr Brian Swift was delighted and proud to say that through Unitrans’ collaboration with these three Departments, they poised to form a formidable force for transmitting road safety information to the youth in the school system. In the process they also hope that teachers, parents and, indeed, all road users will be sensitized about the hazards of road accidents which the children are exposed to at their schools and around their immediate environment.
Unitrans Africa Botswana is fully committed to working with all stakeholders to reduce the intractable incidence of road accidents. At Bokamoso Junior Secondary School, Unitrans engaged with students as a targeted group in this community. In his speech the MD for Unitrans said “This is in our humble effort to change and positively influence unsafe behavior on the roads.”
It was unanimously agreed to organise this event under the theme: “Babalela Bokamoso – Think Child Safety – Act Now!.” This is compatible with the Setswana adage: “Ntima, o mphele ngwana” (meaning, if you can’t afford to give me something rather give the little you can to my child).
Speaking to the Gazzette, event organizing committee chairperson and also the Safety Manager for Unitrans, Mr Michael Zano, indicated that the support for Children Road Safety was number one priority on their CSR programs.
A mobile traffic school was present to teach the children on road safety. Also various stalls were available for students to learn including the one from Unitrans, DRTS, MVA Fund, Botswana Police Drugs and Narcotics Division and various EMS agencies.
