Secunda Depot Shines As A Leader In Diversity and Women Empowerment

Our Unitrans Secunda Mega Bus Depot is a shining example of women empowerment and gender diversity in the transportation industry. During Women’s Month, we spotlight the remarkable achievements of the female drivers and staff at this depot, who break barriers and redefine the norms.

Driving change: 70 female drivers

The Secunda Depot stands out with an impressive 32% of its staff complement being female drivers. This is in stark contrast to the industry norm, which typically ranges from 5% to 10% women drivers. Strategically, employing more female drivers has proven to be a competitive advantage and an operational benefit for our Secunda Depot.

Empowered journeys: women’s career progress

Many of the women at the Secunda Depot joined the Unitrans family through our learnership programme and have since progressed through the ranks, taking on roles as Inspectors, Supervisors, and Contract Managers. Their stories are a testament to the Depot’s commitment to supporting women’s career development and providing them with opportunities to thrive.

Voices of inspiration

We had the privilege of speaking with some of the remarkable women at the Secunda Depot, who shared their journeys and the support they have received from the Unitrans team.

Nompumelelo, who started as a Bus Driver in 2015 and is now a Supervisor, said: “My team of passionate people inspires me. I was promoted to Inspector in 2017, and now I am a Supervisor. I know our operational challenges can always be overcome through working as a team. I manage more than 60 people, and the true spirit of teamwork shines throughout our team. I consider work my home as there’s no stress.”

Nombuso joined Unitrans in 2009 and has since progressed through various roles, including Human Resource and Transportation Management, and now occupies the role of Contract Manager. She shared: “I have enjoyed the journey because of the support I have across the team and my Managers. I manage 126 Drivers, 8 Inspectors, and 2 Controllers. I feel at home in my role, and have also acquired further qualifications during my journey at Unitrans.”

An inclusive environment

The Secunda Depot’s success in empowering women is not just about the numbers, but also the supportive environment and the commitment of the management team. Carel and Andrew, leaders at the Secunda Depot, have prioritised diversity, equity, and inclusion, creating a culture where women can thrive and reach their full potential.

As Nompumelelo eloquently stated: “Managerial support and a supportive team means women leaders are enabled towards success.” This sentiment is echoed by the other women who have found a welcoming and nurturing environment at the Secunda Depot.

Our Unitrans Secunda Mega Bus Depot is a shining example of how diversity and women’s empowerment can drive success in the transportation industry.
