Growth in Action: Career Journeys at Unitrans

At Unitrans, careers are built on opportunity, commitment, and the belief that every individual has the potential to grow into something greater. Two leaders, Randal Jonkers and Nirend Maharaj, showcase how determination and support can transform a first role into a fulfilling career. From entry-level beginnings to senior leadership, their journeys highlight how growth at Unitrans is nurtured through perseverance, guidance, and a shared commitment to excellence.

Randal Jonkers: From General Worker to Contract Manager

When Randal joined Unitrans as a General Worker in 2005, he could not have predicted where the road would take him. Over the past 20 years, his career has been filled with challenges that tested his resolve and triumphs that built his confidence. In 2020, his perseverance was rewarded with a promotion to Contract Manager, a role he holds with pride today.

“One of my biggest triumphs was when I was finally promoted to Contract Manager. It was a validation of all my hard work and dedication that I will always cherish and remember.”

Guided by Others

Randal’s career has been shaped by the influence of mentors and colleagues who shared lessons that stayed with him: the importance of doing the basics right, the value of precision and preparation, and the responsibility to bring others along on the journey. These principles became the cornerstones of his leadership style.

Making Growth Happen

For Randal, growth means sticking to the fundamentals.

“I make growth happen by doing the basics brilliantly.”

Through this approach, he has built strong teams, shared knowledge freely, and created an environment where others can succeed.

Nirend Maharaj: From Bookkeeper to General Manager

Nirend began his journey with Unitrans in 2007 as a Bookkeeper in the Food division. Within a few years, he had progressed to Admin Manager for Unitrans’contracts with one of South Africa’s leading food retailers, later becoming Assistant Financial Manager. In 2017, he transferred to KZN, where he entered the Petroleum sector as an Accountant. Today, he has grown into the role of General Manager, leading with a focus on clarity, resilience, and continuous improvement.

Shaped by Leadership

Throughout his career, Nirend benefited from the support and guidance of influential leaders who challenged him, coached him, and provided opportunities to step into greater responsibility. From financial management to regional operations, their influence helped him refine his leadership skills and develop the confidence to take on complex challenges.

Overcoming Challenges

Nirend’s career has been marked by both demanding markets and unexpected disruptions. Yet, through each transition he has consistently guided his teams with resilience and focus. He also takes pride in having set up payroll systems, established administrative structures, and steering petroleum operations through periods of change. These experiences have strengthened not only his leadership, but also the adaptability of the teams he leads.

Making Growth Happen

For Nirend, growth requires direction and accountability:

“I make growth happen by setting clear goals and tracking progress continuously.”

His advice to his younger self and to those starting out is to be proactive: take initiative, volunteer for projects, and show a willingness to go beyond what is expected.

Two Journeys, One Truth

Though their stories are unique, both Randal and Nirend show that careers at Unitrans are built on resilience, support, and a shared belief in empowering others. Their journeys remind us that when people grow, the business grows and that every role, no matter how it begins, can become the start of something extraordinary.

At Unitrans, growth is not just a destination, it’s a journey shaped every day by the people who live it.
