Interschools Road Safety Education Initiative

ROAD SAFETY AND AWARENESS

Unitrans Mozambique supported the premier edition of the Matola Interschools Road Safety Competition. The schools, together had an outreach of 14 000 learners as well as their parents in the surrounding community. The final event was held on 23 October 2019 and the semi-final at the Municipal Auditorium in Matola. The event was a collaboration between TRAC and its road users in Matola, Mozambique, mainly the EN4 users. Over 10 companies participated, including some of Unitrans Africa’s major clients and suppliers.

The objective of the initiative was to involve the key players operating in the area covered by the EN4 in the city of Matola in the Maputo Province where it was identified that many roads did not have pedestrian access from one side to the other, inadequate signage, and limited barriers. There are many schools in closeness to this road, and it was proposed to improve the safety through road safety education. Professional actors were hired by SRMC to disseminate educational road safety best practice across the schools around Matola. This was developed into a theatre competition which was successfully launched between the schools and the best road safety initiative was awarded with 10,000.00 USD. A sponsorship to assist the school to purchase educational materials, construct road safety signs and improve the study environment.
