A Safer Shift: How Unitrans Leverages Technology to Support Mining Drivers

At Unitrans, we believe safety and efficiency should be approached as a single concept. This is especially true when it comes to how we support mining drivers, where safety is not just a priority but a non-negotiable aspect of day-to-day operations.

We understand the challenges they face – challenges that test their focus, skill, and resilience. Navigating unpredictable terrain, managing heavy machinery, and staying alert during long shifts all require unwavering attention to safety protocols. By integrating cutting-edge safety measures with operational efficiency, we offer our mining customers the peace of mind that every journey is as safe as it is productive.

Our team combines their deep experience in industry with industry-leading technology systems and tools that are designed to predict, prevent, and mitigate the risks associated with driving and operating heavy machinery and vehicles on mines.

But instead of simply listing these technologies, step into the world of one of our Unitrans mining drivers to experience the impact these safety support systems have shift in and shift out. Imagine this… It’s the start of one of your driver’s shifts…

Dash cam: The Safety Mentor on Board

As the driver climbs inside the cab of the truck, he’s greeted by the lights and sounds of the systems designed to support him along every kilometer that lies ahead. The first of which is a dash cam.

As the big wheels start turning, it’s already at work, quietly observing and recording the driver’s habits. But it doesn’t just capture driving behaviour—it understands it. Using its advanced video event recorder, it not only detects instances of harsh braking or sharp cornering but also identifies the reasons behind them. Whether it’s a pedestrian crossing unexpectedly, a sudden obstacle, or another vehicle’s abrupt stop, the system analyses these moments to provide valuable insights.

Back at the control centre, the dash cam technology offers a broader view that pinpoints areas of improvement that can be used in tailored coaching sessions to improve the driver’s behaviour to help reinforce a culture of safety.

Driver Attention Monitoring System: A Watchful Eye for the Long Haul

The shift is now in full swing and your driver may begin to feel a little fatigued, but he pushes on. This monitoring system keeps a watchful eye as the day (or night!) progresses. Using cutting-edge retina and facial monitoring, it detects signs of drowsiness or distraction – even a longer blink or a subtle nod.

Before the driver’s fatigue becomes a potential safety risk, an alarm sounds, notifying him that it’s time to pull over, rest, and regroup – our driver’s safety comes first. If he misses the alert, the driver alert system triggers a real-time video clip to our control room, allowing them to step in to guide the driver or to arrange for assistance. With the driver attention monitoring  technology, drivers are never alone in their fight against fatigue.

Advanced Driver Assistance Safety Systems: An Extra Pair of Eyes on the Road

As the driver continues to play his part in the bustling ecosystem of the mine and navigates his way through the myriad of vehicles, machinery and people, he is able to do so confidently, knowing that he has a co-pilot in the form of Advanced Driving Assistance Safety Systems. Carefully monitoring driver routes and the movement of the vehicles in the vicinity it sounds a gentle alert if a driver drifts off route, while a forward collision alert reminds him to brake when a vehicle ahead suddenly slows down or should a pedestrian step into view – this technology doesn’t miss a beat. Its Pedestrian Collision Warning ensures drivers are made aware in time to stop. Even traffic signs don’t escape its notice – it reads and relays them to the driver, heightening awareness and helping drivers to comply with safety standards whilst staying focused on the task at hand.

Collision Avoidance System: Protecting What You Can’t See

The vehicle our driver is operating is as big as the load it has to carry – immense – creating blind spots that are extremely challenging to circumvent. Collision Avoidance System (CAS) is a technology that extends drivers’ awareness far beyond what’s visible. It gives them an accurate view of every vehicle and asset within a 500-metre radius, alerting them of potential risks with almost pinpoint accuracy. As our driver navigates tight paths or reverses near heavy equipment, CAS turns guessing into accurate and informed driving behaviour by actively predicting and preventing collisions in real time.

Vehicle Intervention System: When Action Is Critical

During every shift drivers at mines are aware of the fact that despite all precautions, there will be moments when split-second decisions need to be made to avoid accidents. But they take comfort in knowing that should the moment arise they have the support of the Vehicle Intervention System (VIS) installed on their vehicles. VIS isn’t just a backup plan – it’s a life-saving innovation.

From Start to Finish: Safety in Every Moment

Our driver’s shift draws to a close. As he parks the truck, he experiences a sense of reassurance. He has made it through the day safely, supported by every alarm, alert, and intervention that weren’t mere technological features, but partners in his shift. Helping him to do what he does best – safely.

At Unitrans, we understand that safety protocols are critical to mining operations. That’s why we invest in state-of-the-art technology designed to enhance efficiency and productivity—without compromising on safety. Our advanced solutions seamlessly integrate with mining operations, providing real-time insights and proactive risk management. With Unitrans, mine management can operate with confidence, knowing that safety remains at the forefront while optimising performance.
